Saponification

I’ve never really been interested in science until now. But as I began to loathe the ingredients on the backs of bottle after bottle of body wash, I began to develop a deep hunger to make soap healthy (again.) {Can we jump on the MAGA, MAHA train and start a MSHA trend? Yes, and I will!} I’m a DIYer for most things since having children, and it was inevitable to jump into the world of soap making. Read along with me… you’ll enjoy the ride.

By definition, saponification is “The act, process, or result, of soap making; conversion into soap; specifically (Chem.), the decomposition of fats and other ethereal salts by alkalies.”

The saying goes, “no lye, no soap.” You cannot turn lye into soap by itself. Nor can you mix up a bunch of oils and bathe yourself in them hoping to get cleansed. The two must be mixed - and Saponified. They become a new scientific compound.

You can use just about any oil to mix with lye, and most corporate soap companies do. And if you want to wash yourself with soap laced with palm oil, glycerin, oxides, or chemicals we can’t pronounce, there are many choices out there. But for me and my family, we’re going to Make Soap Healthy Again. (MSHA!)

So when we saponify our soaps, you can expect the only ingredients to be a variation of the combo: Rendered Beef Tallow, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, and Castor Oil. We list our ingredients in order of the most used percentage.

There is the occasional Shea Butter addition (in our Cashmere bar soap), and maybe we’ll add goat’s milk one day, but for now, we’re going the simpler route.
